Inquiry Removal

Hard Inquiry Removal

Unauthorized hard inquiries can drop your score 5–10 points each and stay on your report for 2 years. Here's exactly how to remove the ones you never authorized — using your federally protected rights.

A hard inquiry (or 'hard pull') appears when a lender checks your credit to approve a new application. If you didn't authorize it, the Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the right to dispute and remove it. Authorized inquiries fall off after 24 months and only affect your score for the first 12 — there's no legal method to remove those, and anyone claiming otherwise is violating the CROA.

The Method — Step by Step

  1. 1Pull all three credit reports from AnnualCreditReport.com — the only federally authorized source. You're entitled to one free report per bureau, per week.
  2. 2Review the 'Inquiries Shared with Others' section on each report. Flag any inquiry you did not personally authorize — applications you never filled out or lenders you never contacted.
  3. 3Dispute each unauthorized inquiry directly with the bureau reporting it (Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion). You can dispute online, by mail, or by phone. State clearly: 'I did not authorize this inquiry.'
  4. 4Cite FCRA Section 609 — you have the right to request documentation showing the inquiry was authorized. If the bureau cannot verify it, they must remove it within 30 days.
  5. 5If the bureau verifies it anyway, contact the creditor directly with a goodwill or investigation request letter asking them to remove the pull.
  6. 6For inquiries you DID authorize, they age off automatically after 24 months. Focus your energy on the unauthorized ones — those are legally removable.
💡

Each removed unauthorized inquiry can recover 5–10 points. Disputing 3–4 can mean a 20–40 point swing.

Personal Data Cleanup

Personal Information Removal

Wrong names, old addresses, unknown employers, and phone numbers you don't recognize signal identity mixing or file merging — and they create powerful dispute leverage. Here's how to scrub your file clean.

Your credit report carries personal data: name variations, aliases, current and former addresses, employers, phone numbers, date of birth, and partial SSN. When this data is wrong, it often means your file has been merged with someone else's, or that fraudulent accounts have been opened in your name. Removing incorrect personal info reduces fraud risk and improves score accuracy.

The Method — Step by Step

  1. 1Pull all three reports and review every personal data field: name variations, aliases, addresses (current and former), employers, phone numbers, DOB, and SSN.
  2. 2Flag everything that isn't yours — misspelled names, addresses you never lived at, employers you never worked for, phone numbers you don't recognize. These indicate a mixed or merged file.
  3. 3Dispute each incorrect item with the reporting bureau, stating the information does not belong to you. Bureaus must investigate within 30 days under FCRA Section 611.
  4. 4Send a Section 609 letter requesting the bureau provide documentation showing how they verified the personal information. If they can't produce it, they must remove it.
  5. 5If an item can't be removed, add a 100-word consumer statement explaining the discrepancy. It becomes visible to anyone who pulls your report.
  6. 6Removing incorrect personal info also removes the 'data furnishers' tied to fraudulent accounts — which can cause negative tradelines to fall off alongside it.
💡

Address and employer mismatches are the #1 sign of a mixed file. Cleaning them often causes linked negative accounts to drop simultaneously.

Identity Protection

Secondary Bureau Freeze

Beyond the big three, specialty bureaus collect your data for background checks, insurance, tenant screening, and banking. Freezing them is free by federal law — and it cuts off data furnishers while protecting your identity.

Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion aren't the only agencies tracking you. Secondary and specialty consumer reporting agencies — Innovis, LexisNexis, CoreLogic, ChexSystems, SageStream — collect your data for background checks, insurance underwriting, tenant screening, and bank account approvals. Under FCRA Section 605, you have the right to freeze each one for free. Freezing stops unauthorized access, prevents synthetic identity fraud, and limits who can report negative data on you.

The Method — Step by Step

  1. 1Freeze Innovis at innovis.com — the fourth major credit bureau. Prevents new accounts from being opened using your data.
  2. 2Freeze LexisNexis at the LexisNexis Consumer Center (lexisnexis.com) — they power background checks, insurance underwriting, and identity verification.
  3. 3Freeze CoreLogic at corelogic.com — they supply tenant screening, property, and fraud data to landlords and lenders.
  4. 4Freeze ChexSystems at chexsystems.com — they track banking history and are queried when you open a new checking or savings account.
  5. 5Freeze SageStream at sagestreamil.com — a lesser-known bureau that still influences certain credit and insurance decisions.
  6. 6Confirm each freeze is free — by federal law (FCRA Section 605), no agency can charge you to place, temporarily lift, or permanently remove a freeze.
💡

Freezing all five secondary bureaus typically takes under an hour and blocks the majority of unauthorized identity-based activity.
